DOCTOR’S NOTES: HOW TO PRESCRIBE THE DRUGS

Before I even think of prescribing the medications, I first take a complete medical history to determine whether there are any major underlying problems that are producing ED. I inquire about diet and exercise programs, too. I’m particularly interested if a patient is an avid cyclist. It now appears that the constant pounding in the genital area, which bicyclists routinely absorb, can cause a deterioration of the blood flow in the delicate penile arteries.

I ask as well if the patient has an already-diagnosed medical disorder, such as diabetes, arthritis, hypothyroidism, or hypertension, which can have an impact on their condition. If any of these problems are present, I explain that I will treat both the medical disorder as well as the resultant ED. Finally, I perform a complete medical work-up, including blood tests and blood pressure test.

Sometimes, a man won’t have a specific illness associated with ED, or have suffered an injury. His cholesterol is normal and there is no obvious reason for his problem. Unlike other medical problems, the actual cause of ED is not a determinant in its treatment. I believe protracted testing to pinpoint the physical or psychological underlying, causes of ED isn’t necessary at the outset. What is important is the restoration of erectile function. Letting this problem go untreated will only lead to potentially harmful repercussions in the man’s personal life.

Oftentimes, over the course of treatment, clues begin to surface about the exact nature of the problem. Whenever possible, I will follow these up and work toward a specific diagnosis. Sometimes minor adjustments in lifestyle, and dietary and exercise modifications are all that it takes to halt the progression of ED.

I tell my patients that, in some cases, ED is an ailment that will require continual treatment that we will overcome together. But by following the treatments outlined in this book, they can expect changes that will, eventually, result in sexual satisfaction for themselves and their partners. In some cases, special psychological counseling may be required to help mend the anxiety or anger that is often ED-related.
